Tamil99 is a Tamil keyboard layout standard approved by the Government of Tamil Nadu in 1999 (G.O. Ms. No. 17, IT Department). [1] It is designed to be intuitive for Tamil speakers — vowels are placed on the left side of the keyboard and consonants on the right. The pulli (virama) is placed on the central F key for easy access.
When typing with the Tamil99 layout, pressing English keys produces Tamil characters. For example, pressing A produces அ, and pressing H produces க.
If you are preparing for government typing exams in Tamil Nadu, practicing with the Tamil99 layout is essential because:
To use the Tamil99 keyboard layout on your own computer for offline practice, download the keyboard layout driver from ELCOT (Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu) — the official source maintained by the Tamil Nadu government. [5]
Your Tamil99 typing speed is measured using the same method as government exams. Understanding these metrics helps you track your progress and meet exam requirements.
Gross speed counts every character you type, correct or not. In government exams, every 5 characters are counted as 1 word.
Example: Typing 750 characters in 5 minutes → 750 ÷ 25 = 30 WPM
Net speed is what actually matters in exams. Errors are subtracted from your gross score to give a true picture of your typing performance.
Example: 700 correct characters in 5 minutes → 700 ÷ 25 = 28 WPM
Accuracy shows what fraction of your keystrokes were correct. TNPSC [2] and SSC [4] exams require a minimum of 90–95% accuracy alongside the required speed.
Example: 700 correct out of 750 total → (700 ÷ 750) × 100 = 93.3%
